Desde então, expandiu-se pelo Hemisfério Norte, com festivais adicionais em Antuérpia (Bélgica), Oslo (Noruega) e Nova York (EUA).\nO DesertFest original, DesertFest London, foi concebido inicialmente por Reece Tee e Jake Farey da empresa de promoção musical Desertscene. Desertscene começou a organizar shows em 2009, e após adquirir experiência promovendo bandas individuais e ouvindo o desejo das pessoas nos shows por um festival no Reino Unido como o Roadburn Festival, eles decidiram criar o DesertFest.\nO primeiro Desertfest London foi oficialmente anunciado em 26 de julho de 2011 através de uma postagem no Facebook. No início do desenvolvimento da primeira edição do Desertfest London, a equipe por trás do festival se associou à Sound of Liberation para criar um equivalente alemão, o DesertFest Berlin.
