Nick Cave é sem dúvida um dos artistas mais conhecidos da Austrália em todo o mundo. Ao longo de sua carreira, o renomado artista experimentou uma variedade de estilos, tanto liricamente quanto instrumentalmente. Com o passar do tempo, ele se tornou uma lenda que lota quase todos os seus shows.

Ele deu seus primeiros passos na música no início dos anos setenta, quando ainda estava no ensino médio. Junto com outros estudantes, ele formou uma banda que se apresentava em festas escolares, tocando músicas de Alice Cooper, Roxy Music e David Bowie, entre outros. Pouco depois, a banda começou a escrever suas próprias músicas sob vários nomes e, em 1980, mudaram-se para Londres, adotando o nome de The Birthday Party. Sua música era uma mistura de punk, jazz e tinha muitos elementos góticos, um som agressivo e experimental, com Cave frequentemente cantando de maneira visceral.

Após a disintegração de The Birthday Party em 1983, dois de seus membros, Mick Harvey e Nick Cave, recrutaram o vocalista do Einstürzende Neubauten, Blixa Bargeld, e em 1984, junto com Hugo Race e Barry Adamson, formaram a primeira formação estável de Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, gravando seu primeiro álbum, From Her to Eternity.

Em 1985, a banda mudou-se para West Berlin e gravou seu segundo álbum, The First Born is Dead. Aqui começa um período muito produtivo para a banda, cuja música é fortemente influenciada por artistas do sul dos EUA (Elvis Presley, Leadbelly ou Johnny Cash, para citar alguns) e pelo gênero Americana. Em 1986, a banda lançou Your Funeral, My Trial, e começou a ter um público crescente a cada novo lançamento.

Em 1990, uma nova fase começou. Após se mudar para o Brasil e se reabilitar do vício em drogas, Cave começou a explorar baladas de piano e lançou o álbum de 1990 The Good Son, que foi bem recebido tanto pela crítica quanto pelo público.

Em 1993, a banda se tornou conhecida mundialmente com Let Love In, um de seus trabalhos mais conhecidos, que inclui faixas como “Red Right Hand” e “Loverman” (regravada pelo Metallica em seu álbum Garage Inc).

Murder Ballads, seu álbum mais bem-sucedido até hoje, foi lançado em 1996. Um álbum em torno do tema do assassinato, com colaborações de PJ Harvey e Kylie Minogue.

Em 2003, após um hiato e o lançamento de outros trabalhos menores, a banda lançou Nocturama, que recebeu críticas mistas. Este álbum também marca a saída de Blixa Bargeld do grupo após 20 anos como multi-instrumentista. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, um álbum duplo, foi lançado no ano seguinte.

Grinderman, projeto paralelo de Cave com membros da banda principal, foi formado em 2006. Para a ocasião, Cave pegou a guitarra, e o som incorporou uma forte influência de Garage Rock ao som dos Bad Seeds. Essa nova reviravolta na carreira de Cave também influenciaria seu trabalho futuro com os Bad Seeds, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!. A revista NME descreveu o álbum como um “apocalipse psico-sexual gótico“.

A banda continuou gravando álbuns na década de 2013-2023, apesar das dificuldades da pandemia de Covid-19 (veja a discografia abaixo).

No dia 6 de março deste ano, o 18º álbum da banda foi anunciado, com o single “The Wild God”, lançado no mesmo dia. Um segundo single, “Frogs”, foi lançado em 31 de maio. Enquanto a faixa “The Wild God” tem um som mais limpo que lembra o trabalho solo de Lou Reed, “Frogs” cria uma atmosfera mais experimental, multi-camadas e onírica. O álbum completo The Wild God será lançado internacionalmente em 30 de agosto.

Nick Cave is undoubtedly one of Australia‘s best-known artists worldwide. Throughout his career, the famed artist has experimented with a variety of styles both lyrically and instrumentally. With the pass of time, he has become a legend who sells out almost all of his shows.

He took his first steps in music in the early seventies, when he was still in high school. Together with other students, he formed a band that performed at school parties, covering Alice Cooper, Roxy Music and David Bowie, among others. Soon after the band began writing their own songs under various names and in 1980 moved to London, where they adopted the name The Birthday Party. Their music was a mix of punk, jazz and and had lots of gothic elements, an aggressive and experimental sound, with Cave often singing in a visceral way.

After the disintegration of The Birthday Party in 1983, two of its members, Mick Harvey and Nick Cave, recruited Einstürzende Neubauten frontman Blixa Bargeld and in 1984, together with Hugo Race and Barry Adamson, they became the first stable line-up of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, recording their first album, From Her to Eternity.

In 1985 the band moved to West Berlin and recorded a second album, The First Born is Dead. Here begins a very productive period for the band, whose music is heavily influenced by Southern USA artists (Elvis Presley, Leadbelly or Johnny Cash, to name a few) and what is known as the Americana genre. In 1986 the band released Your Funeral, My Trial, and began to have a following that grew with each new release.

In 1990 a new phase began. After moving to Brazil and rehabilitating from drug addiction, Cave began to explore piano ballads and released the 1990 album The Good Son, which was well received by critics and audiences alike.

In 1993, the band became a household name with Let Love In, one of their best-known works, which includes tracks such as “Red Right Hand” and “Loverman” (covered by Metallica in their album Garage Inc).

Murder Ballads, their most successful album to date, was released in 1996. An album around the theme of murder, with collaborations with PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue.

In 2003, after a hiatus and the release of other minor works, the band released Nocturama, which received mixed reviews. This album also marks Blixa Bargeld’s departure from the group after 20 years as a multi-instrumentalist. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, a double album, was released the following year.

Grinderman, Cave’s side project of The Bad Seeds, was formed in 2006 with some members of the core band. For the occassion, Cave takes up the guitar, and their sound incorporates a strong Garage Rock influence into the Bad Seeds’ sound. This new twist in Cave’s career will also influence his forthcoming work with The Bad Seeds, Dig, Lazarus, Dig! NME magazine described the album as a “gothic psycho-sexual apocalypse“.

The band continued recording albums in the decade of 2013-2023, despite the hardships of the Covid-19 pandemic (see discography down below).

On the 6th of March of this year, the bands 18th album was announced, with the single “The Wild God”, released on that same day. A second single, “Frogs”, was released on the 31st of May. While  the track “The Wild God” has a cleaner sound that reminds of Lou Reed‘s solo work, “Frogs” creates a more experimental, multi-layered and dreamy atmosphere. The full album The Wild God will be released internationally on the 30th of August.
