Eles existem há dez anos e são uma das bandas de maior sucesso na cena punk rock espanhola. Os rapazes de Barcelona começaram a fazer skate punk melódico em 2008 sob o nome de Godfarts, mudando para Blowfuse alguns anos depois, em 2013. Desde então, a banda evoluiu e diversificou o seu som ao longo dos anos. O seu 4º álbum “The 4th Wall” foi lançado no dia 1º de março, e tentarei ser o mais imparcial possível com esta crítica, pois tornei-me um grande fã desde o álbum anterior “Daily Ritual” de 2019.
A música de abertura do álbum “Move On”, tem na sua linha de baixo inicial, o groove a que a banda já nos habituou, mantendo-se bastante cativante, mesmo numa música sobre separação com alguém que, aparentemente, se recusa a fazer isso. “Move On” foi uma das primeiras músicas a ser revelada alguns meses antes do disco, recebendo inúmeras críticas positivas dos fãs.
“Wish” é outro tema marcadamente groovy, um pouco mais pop do que estamos acostumados, mas ainda assim uma música incrível com letras cativantes sobre como deveríamos ter feito as coisas de outra maneira, mas aceitando no final que é assim que as coisas acontecem e que a vida é muito curta para arrependimentos. Dinâmica de voz e backing vocals muito interessantes nesta música!
Outra música também com riffs de guitarra e linhas de baixo energéticos, “I Give You My Word” tem provavelmente o refrão mais catchy de todo o álbum! “I swear to God i´m trying, I swear to God i´m not lying” é o lema para alcançar a melhoria e tentar mudar. Esta música também foi um dos singles lançados em antecipação à promoção de “The 4th Wall”.
“Fade Into The Dark” começa um pouco no estilo Megadeth, isto mostra o quão ecléticas e diversas são as influências musicais da banda, e como eles cresceram como músicos. Riffs mais pesados também significam letras mais pesadas e sombrias, e esta soa particularmente pessoal e profunda: “Close your eyes, will you pray for me? Please light up a spark. I need an angel to be by my side. Before I disappear and fade into the dark”
De volta a uma música mais leve, mas com uma letra um tanto angustiada “Something isn’t fine I’m playing pretend But I’m starting to get all the signs”, ainda assim, “Far Away” começa com breaks de bateria enérgicos e é tão catchy quanto qualquer outra música do disco. A música também é um convite para ajudar quem a escreveu a entender a sua própria mente.
“No Matter What I Do” pode ser provavelmente o tema mais pop do álbum, liricamente e musicalmente falando. Não considero isso um desvio do som tradicional dos Blowfuse, mas sim uma abertura para novos públicos e uma abordagem ao género pop punk.
Groove novamente! Muito groove em “Enjoy The Ride”! Uma música que certamente irá ajudar quem se estiver a sentir em baixo. Este tema é uma resposta para quem precisa de uma mão amiga: “It’s your life Go enjoy the ride It’s your life” ,e termina como um alerta para o quanto a vida é curta.
“State Of Denial” é um sucesso em todos os aspectos e uma das minhas faixas favoritas do álbum (eu sei que disse que seria imparcial!). Uma canção de rompimento não tradicional, sem lamentações que, em vez disso, leva a uma tentativa de autoconsciência e, ultimamente, à percepção de se estar em negação. As mudanças dinâmicas na música tornam-na interessantemente rica e tecnicamente complexa, a introdução de um solo de guitarra mais longo mostra isso muito bem. A música foi lançada muito antes do anúncio de um novo álbum.
Inesperadamente, “Cold Steel” aparece na forma de uma power ballad! Nesta música o vocalista Oscar Puig mostra toda sua dinâmica vocal tornando-a a faixa mais surpreendente do disco. Uma banda que começou por tocar punk rock rápido e rebelde pode lançar uma música tão intensa? Sim pode! Começando devagar, a intensidade logo começa a crescer trazendo novamente o groove que os Blowfuse tão bem dominam e que combinou tão bem nesta música cativante.

They have been around for ten years and are one of the most successful bands on the spanish punk rock scene. The guys from Barcelona started making fast-paced melodic skate punk in 2008 under the name Godfarts, switching to Blowfuse a few years later in 2013. Since then, the band has evolved and diversified their sound over the years. Their 4th album “The 4th Wall” was released on March 1st, and I will try to be as impartial as possible with this review, as I have become a big fan since their previous album “Daily Ritual” from 2019.
The opening tune of the album “Move On”, has in its initial bass line, the inherent groove that the band has already accustomed us to, while remaining catchy enough, even on a song about parting ways with someone who, apparently refuses to do it. “Move On” was one of the first songs to be revealed some months prior the record, receiving numerous positive reviews from fans.
“Wish” is another markedly groovy theme, a little bit poppier though than what we are used to, but still an awesome tune with captivating lyrics about how we should have done things another way, but accepting in the end that’s the way things go and life´s too short for regrets. Interesting voice dynamics and backup vocals on this song!
Another song with some energetic guitar riffs and bass lines, “I Give You My Word” has probably the catchiest chorus of the whole album! “I swear to God i´m trying, I swear to God i´m not lying” is the moto for reaching betterness and try to change. This song was also one of the singles released in anticipation to promote “The 4th Wall”.
“Fade Into The Dark” starts somehow a little bit Megadeth-esque, remotely reminiscent of the heavy riffs of one of the big four of thrash metal. This shows how eclectic and diverse the band’s musical influences are, and how they have grown as musicians. Heavier riffs also mean heavier and darker lyrics, and this sound particularly personal and deep: “Close your eyes, will you pray for me? Please light up a spark. I need an angel to be by my side. Before I disappear and fade into the dark”
Back to a happier tune but with somewhat angst lyrics “Something isn’t fine
I’m playing pretend But I’m starting to get all the signs”, still, “Far Away” begins with energic drum breaks and is as catchy as any other tune on the record. The song is also an invitation to help who wrote the song to understand his own mind.
“No Matter What I Do” might be probably the poppiest theme on the record, lyrically and musically speaking. I wouldn´t consider it a deviation from Blowfuse´s traditional sound, but instead an opening to new audiences, and an approach to pop punk genre.
Groove again! Lot´s of it on “Enjoy The Ride”! A bring up song that surely will help you if you´re feeling down. This theme is an answer to those who need of a helping hand, “It’s your life Go enjoy the ride It’s your life” and ends up as wake up call to how short life is.
“State Of Denial” is a banger in every aspect and one of my favourite tracks on the album (I know I said I would be impartial!). A non traditional breakup song, with no whining that instead leads to an attempt at self-awareness, and lately to a realization of being in denial. The dymanic changes in the song makes it interestingly rich and technically complex, the introduction of a longer guitar solo shows that pretty well. The song was released long before the announcement of a new album.
Unexpectedly, “Cold Steel” appears in the form of a power ballad! In this song, vocalist Oscar Puig shows all his vocal dynamics making it the most surprising track on the record. Can a band that started putting out fast, loud, rebellious punk rock come out with a song this intense? Yes they can! Starting slow, the intensity soon starts to grow bringing again the groove that Blowfuse has mastered and blended so well in this catchy song.
