O multi-instrumentista e compositor Justin Greaves (Iron Monkey, Electric Wizard, Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine) formou o Crippled Black Phoenix em 2004: um projeto musical fluido (poderíamos até chamá-lo de supergrupo) sem formação fixa nem direção musical definida. Alguns dos músicos que já fizeram parte do CBP são membros do Gonga, Mogwai, Electric Wizard, Hearts of Black Science, entre outros. Nos últimos álbuns, a vocalista e letrista Belinda Kordic tornou-se uma figura-chave no desenvolvimento do projeto, tanto no nível performático quanto conceitual.
O som do projeto muda de álbum para álbum, dada a variabilidade da formação, composta por 4 a 9 músicos. Os primeiros lançamentos da banda apresentam composições longas com um toque cinematográfico, geralmente inspiradas em grandes narrativas históricas. Outros álbuns incorporam instrumentos folclóricos e da era vitoriana em conjunto com seus elementos de rock. Seu álbum de estreia foi *A Love of Shared Disasters*, lançado em 2007, e o projeto já lançou, desde então, 12 álbuns de estúdio em estilos diversos, que vão do doom-sludge ao post-rock, metal, folk e o que Greaves chama de “baladas do fim dos tempos”, que lembram ao ouvinte bandas como Dead Can Dance, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds ou mesmo Tiamat. Todos os álbuns exalam uma atmosfera de beleza misteriosa, cheia de tensão e emoção.
As apresentações ao vivo da banda são intensas, teatrais e visam envolver o público no momento presente, em uma mistura de melancolia e poder irrestrito.
Sceaduhelm, seu próximo LP, será lançado no dia 17 de abril e, muito provavelmente, será a espinha dorsal da apresentação no DesertFest Berlin 2026. Sceaduhelm apresenta uma abordagem mais pessoal e aborda temas como o esgotamento emocional ou o burnout, incorporando elementos de darkwave e progressivo.

The British band will release their next creation, Sceaduhelm, on April 17th via Season of Mist
Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Justin Greaves (Iron Monkey, Electric Wizard, Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine) formed Crippled Black Phoenix in 2004: A fluid musical project (we could even call it supergroup) with neither a fixed line-up nor a clear musical direction. Some of the musicians who have been part of CBP are members of Gonga, Mogwai, Electric Wizard, Hearts of Black Science among others. In the last albums, vocalist and lyricist Belinda Kordic has become a key figure in the development of the project, both at the performance and conceptual level.
The project’s sound changes from album to album given the variability of the line-up, formed up by 4-9 musicians. The band’s early releases display long-form compositions with a cinematic flair, usually inspired by great historical narratives. Other albums incorporate folk and Victorian-era instruments in tandem with their rock elements. Their debut album was A Love of Shared Disasters, released in 2007, and the project has since then delivered 12 Studio albums in different styles, ranging from doom-sludge to post-rock, metal, folk and what Greaves calls “endtime ballads”, which will remind the listener of bands like Dead Can Dance, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds or even Tiamat. All albums exhudate an atmosphere of eerie beauty, full of tension an emotion.
The band’s live performances are intense, theatrical and aimed to shroud the audience into the present moment, in a mix of melancholy and unbound power.
Sceaduhelm, their next LP, will see the light on April 17th and will very likely be the backbone of the performance at DesertFest Berlin 2026. Sceaduhelm has a more personal approach and focuses on themes such as emotional fatigue or burnout, and incorporates darkwave and progressive elements.
