Apesar do tráfego intenso nas ruas próximas causado pelo jogo do White Sox, o Metro já estava lotando cedo para uma noite de música extrema trazida pelo Decibel Magazine Tour.
Blackbraid
A primeira banda da noite foi o Blackbraid, um projeto solo de black metal de Jon Krieger (Sgah’gahsowáh) das montanhas Adirondack. O Blackbraid surpreendeu a cena do black metal no outono passado com o lançamento de Blackbraid I, que habilmente mistura black metal com instrumentos indígenas tradicionais. Muito parecido com o álbum, a performance de palco de Krieger na turnê Decibel chamou a atenção da sala e deu início à impressionante programação da noite. 200 Stab Wounds

Cattle Decapitation

Dark Funeral

Despite heavy road and foot traffic on the surrounding streets caused by the nearby White Sox game, Metro was already filling up early for a night of extreme music brought by the Decibel Magazine Tour.
Blackbraid
The first band of the night was Blackbraid, a solo black metal project by Jon Krieger (Sgah’gahsowáh) from the Adirondack Mountains. Blackbraid took the black metal scene by storm last fall with the release of Blackbraid I, which expertly mixes black metal with traditional indigenous instruments. Much like the album, Krieger’s stage performance on the Decibel tour captured the attention of the room and kicked off the impressive lineup for the night. Krieger brought his personal touch to the show by bringing out his flute for one song and performing a brief smudging of the stage and front row before concluding the set. For fans who hope to hear more, Blackbraid II is scheduled to release on July 7.
200 Stab Wounds
Taking the stage after this impressive kickoff, 200 Stab Wounds shifted the vibe into a heavier feeling set of thrashy death metal. Vocalist Steve Buhl was a bit more constrained on the stage, since he also plays guitar, but the venue was beginning to fill up and he took full advantage of this to encourage a pit that began to encompass the middle of the venue. The band also plans to release their sophomore album this year, having already released the first two singles in late 2022.
Cattle Decapitation
Cattle Decapitation carried the death metal forward with their chaotic deathgrind sound, inciting a new level of fury in the pit. Bassist Oliver Pinard was windmilling away as vocalist Travis Ryan traversed the stage, drawing much of the attention with his dynamic performance. The band is touring on their newest record, Terrasite, released on the second day of the tour. Ryan also announced that the band would be returning for a headlining tour in the fall.
Dark Funeral
Closing out the night, black metal legends Dark Funeral require no introductions. They played several songs off of their 2022 album We Are the Apocalypse including the first song of the set, “Nosferatu.” They also reached far back into their early discography with songs like “Vobiscum Satanas” and “Goddess of Sodomy,” during which Heljarmadr drove home the name of the song with a black whip.
Throughout the 13 song set, the band kept the crowd engaged with dramatic guitar solos and duets and used stage props to highlight the imagery. Heljarmadr dedicated the song “When I’m Gone” off the new album “to whom it may concern” noting that the song, which is about leaving the mortal world and the one you love, has “a bit more of a somber tone to it.”
Leading into the final song of the main set, the sacrilegious “Nail Them to the Cross,” he held up a large crucifix to the crowd before proceeding to spit directly onto the religious icon to cheers form the crowd. After this closing ,the band left the stage for a brief drum solo before continuing with a two-song encore off of their latest two albums to conclude the ceremonies of the night.
