No fim de semana do Memorial Day, o Milwaukee Metal Fest (MMF) voltou dos mortos e trouxe uma praga de metaleiros para o The Rave em Milwaukee, WI. Imperial Triumphant

O vocalista Paul Kuhr, o único membro original remanescente da banda, reconheceu suas visitas anteriores ao festival, observando que foi ótimo estar de volta para a renovação.
Mantendo a tradição do doom, a banda tocou um set de trinta e cinco minutos que consistia em apenas cinco canções. O baterista Garry Naples gemeu agressivamente no kit, quase parecendo tocar para uma banda diferente dos guitarristas sombrios da primeira fila, enquanto o baixista Mike Feldman reservou aventurar-se acima das duas cordas mais baixas de seu baixo de 5 cordas para ocasiões especiais. Over Memorial Day weekend, Milwaukee Metal Fest (MMF) returned from the dead and brought a plague of metalheads down on The Rave in Milwaukee, WI. The last instance of the festival was in 2007, and the fest was regenerated after being purchased by Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta in mid-2022. The first run of the fest under the new ownership is actually the 20th year of the festival overall, and the crowd was buzzing with excitement about the fury that was set to unleash over the weekend.
Allegaeon
Allegaeon opened the Knotfest ballroom stage with a wonderful display of technical, melodic death metal. The circle pits didn’t waste any time, starting up less than three songs into the set, and the energy carried through the rest of the weekend.
Khemmis
Khemmis is not new to The Rave, having played the ballroom stage in 2022 with Opeth and Mastodon. They returned with the same heavy metal energy they brought on the last visit, with kicks, jumps, and backbends throughout the songs. The setlist spanned most of their discography, including a heavier song, “Sigil” off of their newest single and the more traditional heavy doom track “A Conversation With Death.” Frontman Phil Pendergast thanked the crowd for coming out and making the show special, and the venue was relatively full, despite the significant schedule overlap with Allegeon upstairs.
Midnight
Playing the IndieMerchStore stage directly after Khemmis, Midnight never disappoints with their high energy black speed metal. As usual, they made full use of the stage to jump, kick, and otherwise chaotically move about while lashing the audience with fast-paced riffs. In the crowd, the pit was swirling around almost as aggressively as the band, especially to the audience favorite “Szex Witchery,” which had many people shouting along. At the end of the set, Athenar did his signature guitar smash and handed the pieces to fans in the front row before finishing the final song.
Goatwhore
Upstairs in the ballroom, Goatwhore had an insane level of energy despite brief technical issues leading into their set. They opened with the line “Fuck it, let’s go – What the fuck is up Milwaukee Metal Fest!” and went right into their first song. If someone missed the first song, it would have been impossible to tell there were any issues at all, because the sound was remarkable. Due to the band’s high energy, the crowd grew even more excited and eager for the day.
Corrosion Of Conformity
The return of Milwaukee Metal Fest was a huge undertaking, and while the fest was running smoothly in the first part of the day, by the second half every stage was running 15-30min behind schedule. This did not deter fans, who continued to fill the large ballroom as Corrosion Of Conformity kicked off their set. The crowd here was more tame than they were for the earlier bands, which might be due to the more chill nature of the band or maybe because everyone was overdue for dinner to replenish their energy. COC have decades of experience individually and together, which shows in the comfortable way they move around the stage and share the spotlight. Their setlist stayed in the relaxed vibes of heavy/doom metal, giving the crowd a bit of a rest from the many extreme bands playing the fest. They played many of their popular songs from across the years, but notably absent from the setlist was their recent single, a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “On The Hunt.”
Crowbar
Downstairs at the IndieMerchStore stage, Crowbar decimated with their low sludgy riffs. The sound was incredible on this stage as well, and there were a number of crowdsurfers and a consistent pit as they played.
Imperial Triumphant
MMF was Imperial Triumphant’s first time playing in Milwaukee and it was a bit disappointing that they were limited to a 25 minute set. The avant-garde band focuses a lot on showmanship and ritual in their live performances, and the shorter set felt a bit rushed, especially when it came to their divine ritual of champagne baptism. Despite the reduced time for displays of grandeur, the MartyrStore bar stage was completely packed with devoted fans, excited to bask in the glowing energy of the trio.
GosT
The bar cleared out a bit before GosT started, possibly because many of the audience were not familiar with the highly underrated darksynth artist, who visited MMF as part of his midwest tour with Imperial Triumphant. For the fest, GosT was joined on stage by a live bassist, Cole Tucker, to accent the keyboard and synth work. When it comes to stage performance, no assistance was required, as the mysterious producer was a master of intrigue, moving around the stage as well as around, under, and through his keyboard stand while playing. The metal fest atmosphere quickly shifted to that of a foggy goth club, with ethereal dancing replacing the usual moshpit and a much more relaxed aura to the space.
Napalm Death
Over at the IndieMerchStore stage Napalm Death sounded awesome with their sound cranked to eleven. Napalm may be due for an upgrade to the ballroom the next time they play, considering the crowd was packed outside the doorways to get just a glimpse of the show. The dense crowd made it nearly impossible to move through the space or return to your spot if you left to grab a beer.
Novembers Doom
Closing out the bar stage, Novembers Doom played a set that spanned a large part of their nearly thirty year discography. The band had played MMF previously, with the last time being in 2002 at the US Cellular Arena (now UWM Panther Arena). Vocalist Paul Kuhr, the only remaining original member of the band, acknowledged his previous visits to the fest, noting that it was great to be back for the renewal.
In true keeping with doom tradition, the band played a thirty-five minute set that consisted of only five songs. Drummer Garry Naples wailed away aggressively on the kit, almost seeming to play for a different band than the somber guitarists in the front row, while bassist Mike Feldman reserved venturing above the lowest two strings of his 5-string bass for special occasions. Kuhr held down the front of the stage with dramatic facial expressions and poses in between verses, helping set the tone for the brief set of dirges.
Revenge
Revenge closed out the IndieMerchStore stage for the night with stunning lighting and excellent sound. Their set was not only technically outstanding, but also visually compelling, due in part to the massive stage presence of the trio. The crowd was constantly making room for mosh pits and there was an electricity to the room which definitely carried onward to the headlining act of the night.
Biohazard
Biohazard made their return to the stage as the Knotfest Stage headliner for Friday night. It was to be their first show since 2015, and the crowd made it clear that they were both ready and excited. The mosh pits were outrageous, and the energy was nuclear. The band’s performance made the crowd riotous, and is a must see for anyone who finds themselves near a show. Rounded out with top tier lighting and flawless sound, the final act of the night left the attendees exhausted, but excited for more.
