Khanate é um supergroup de doom drone composto por membros de Sunn O))), OLD e Blind Idiot God. A banda foi formada em 2000 e está de volta após um hiato de 14 anos, com o lançamento inesperado de seu quinto álbum ‘To Be Cruel’ em maio de 2023, lançado pela Sacred Bones Records.
A banda se apresentará no Roadburn Festival, Tilburg (NL) em abril de 2024 e adicionou dois shows adicionais na Europa: Copenhague (DK) e Berlim (DE). Até agora, esses são todos os eventos confirmados, tanto na Europa quanto nos EUA.
O som do Khanate é um caldeirão de riffs densos, feedback espesso e o característico ritmo lento do drone e doom, com traços de noise e avant-garde. Suas músicas geralmente oscilam entre 10-30 minutos: linhas de baixo imponentes, tambores e pratos derramando-se, guitarras angustiantes servem de base para um abismo de onde Rubin uiva, sussurra e grita para o mundo e para si mesmo.
‘To be cruel’ é uma sessão sônica governada pela tensão e desespero: “We’d cry if we could”, guincha Rubin na última faixa, que compartilha o nome com o álbum. Em uma entrevista para a Revolver Magazine, ele declarou: “The album viscerally and metaphorically portrays a self-immolating destiny that perhaps ironically blames outside entities. There is a need for revenge but… against who and why”.

Khanate is a doom drone supergroup featuring members of Sunn O))), OLD and Blind Idiot God. The band formed in 2000 and is back after a hiatus of 14 years, with the unexpected drop of their fifth album ‘To Be Cruel’ in May 2023, released by Sacred Bones Records.
The band will play at Roadburn Festival, Tilburg (NL) in April 2024 and has added two more shows in Europe: Copenhagen (DK) and Berlin (DE). So far these are all the events confirmed, both in Europe and the USA.
Khanate’s sound is a melting-pot of dense riffs, thick feedback and the characteristic slow tempo of drone and doom, with traces of noise and avant-garde. Their songs usually oscilate between 10-30 minutes: looming bass lines, spilling drums and cymbals, harrowing guitars serve as the foundation of an abyss from which Rubin howls, whispers and yells at the world and at himself.
‘To be cruel’ is a sonic séance ruled by tension and despair: “We’d cry if we could”, squeals Rubin in the last track, which shares name with the album. In an interview for Revolver Magazine, he declared: “The album viscerally and metaphorically portrays a self-immolating destiny that perhaps ironically blames outside entities. There is a need for revenge but… against who and why?”.
