Pelican costuma ser classificado como post-metal, instrumental ou doom. Mas esses rótulos refletem apenas alguns aspectos do alcance musical do quarteto. Eles são frequentemente comparados a bandas como Isis, Russian Circles ou Red Sparrows.
Formada em Chicago, Illinois, EUA, em 2001, a banda passou por diferentes transformações criativas, apesar de manter um núcleo sonoro sólido. Eles são geralmente descritos como instrumentais, mas, nas palavras do guitarrista Trevor de Brauw: “Sinto que fazemos parte de uma trajetória de bandas do Meio-Oeste que misturam agressividade com uma sensibilidade pop; portanto, embora seja fácil nos classificar como bandas instrumentais, não somos instrumentais por definição.”
Pelican consegue criar uma rica paleta de atmosferas por meio de sua música. Suas faixas são longas e atmosféricas, sejam melódicas ou pesadas, repletas de belas transições, abrindo uma janela para a introspecção. Seus álbuns são unidades sólidas, histórias sem palavras para o ouvinte interpretar.
Eles mantêm a formação original desde 2001: Bryan Herweg no baixo, Larry Herweg na bateria e Trevor de Brauw na guitarra, com exceção do guitarrista Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, que foi substituído por Dallas Thomas entre 2012 e 2020.
Pelican lançou um total de sete álbuns de estúdio e sete EPs. Ascending, seu último EP, foi lançado este ano. Nesta primavera, eles estarão em turnê pela Europa com o Russian Circles, tocando em diferentes festivais, incluindo também o DesertFest Oslo.

Pelican is usually labelled as post-metal, instrumental or doom. But those labels just reflect a few aspects of the quartet’s musical scope. They are usually compared to bands such as Isis, Russian Circles or Red Sparrows.
Formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 2001, the band has gone through different creative transformations despite keeping a solid sonic core. They are usually described as instrumental, but in guitarrists Trevor de Brauw words: “I feel like we’re part of a trajectory of Midwest bands that kind of blend aggression with a pop sensibility, so while it’s easy to classify us with instrumental bands, we’re not instrumental by design.”
Pelican manage to create a rich palette of moods through their music. Their tracks are long and atmospheric, no matter if melodic or heavy, full of beautiful transtitions, opening a window for instropection. Their records are solid units, worless stories for the listener to interpret.
They keep their original line-up since 2001: Bryan Herweg on bass, Larry Herweg on drums and Trevor de Brauw on guitar, with the exception of guitarrist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec, who was substituted by Dallas Thomas between 2012-2020.
